Expert support, consultations and assessment of barriers

First, understand the problem. Then, propose a technically and socially sound solution.

The expert working group “KNUCA Accessibility” is developing a consulting direction for educational institutions, territorial communities, employers, civil society organizations and other partners. The subject of cooperation may be assessing users’ needs, analyzing existing barriers and preparing recommendations.

Types of requests

  • Review of the accessibility of an educational or public space.
  • Consultation at the stage of the terms of reference, concept or preliminary design.
  • Discussion of accessible circulation routes, navigation, entrances, premises and evacuation scenarios.
  • Recommendations on digital interfaces, documents, registration forms and public information.
  • Preparing topics for trainings, lectures, strategy sessions and staff training.
  • Research requests, collecting user feedback, assessing social impact.

Typical work pathway

1. Request. The organization briefly describes the facility, the problem, the location and the expected result.

2. Clarifying the task. The parties agree on the scope, access to materials, timelines, confidentiality and the possible role of external specialists.

3. Gathering facts. Available plans, photos, procedures and the users’ real route are analyzed. Personal data is not requested unless necessary.

4. Expert discussion. Barriers, risks, possible solutions and issues that require additional technical or legal opinion are formulated.

5. Recommendations. In the agreed format, the client receives a list of measures with priorities, responsible participants and verification criteria.

6. Follow-up check. If needed, feedback is organized after the changes are implemented.

What we do not replace

The working group’s consulting activity is not automatically a state expert review of design documentation, official accessibility certification or a state inspection. Such functions are performed by competent bodies in the manner established by law. The existence of methodological recommendations does not release the owner of a facility or the designer from complying with the applicable norms.

What information is worth preparing

Name of the organization, type of facility or service, locality, a concise description of the barrier, the desired result, approximate materials for review and a contact. For the initial inquiry, there is no need to upload passports, medical opinions or documents on veteran status.
