The decisions that territorial communities make today will determine residents’ quality of life for years to come. Accessible streets, administrative services, shelters, educational institutions, hospitals, workplaces and public spaces form the basis for people’s equal participation in community life.
Partnership between the Institute and communities
The Institute develops contacts with communities and regions of Ukraine, supporting the exchange of knowledge, educational opportunities, and research and project approaches. The barrier-free direction envisages the possibility of cooperation with local self-government bodies, municipal institutions, educational institutions, employers and civil society organizations.
What is important to provide for in a community
Auditing the route, not an individual point. It is worth checking the path from the stop or parking to the entrance, the service, the sanitary facility and a safe exit.
An action plan with priorities. Dangerous barriers, critical public and social services, and the solutions with the greatest impact on users should come first.
Transparent budget and accountability. The community should understand the cost of the work, the sources of funding, the responsible contractors and the way the result will be verified.
Involving residents. Solutions should be tested with people who have different experiences of using space, rather than being limited to formal consultations.
Accessibility of new projects. Universal design principles should be included in design briefs, procurement requirements, and acceptance and operation criteria.
Barrier-free access as an economic strategy
Accessibility increases people’s ability to learn, work, use transport, consume services and start businesses. For communities, this is a matter of human capital, employment and long-term economic resilience, not just spending on individual facilities.
Joint project model
Community request → initial conversation → defining the scope → involving competent specialists and users → roadmap of solutions → training of responsible persons → verification of the result. Such a pathway is a proposed model of cooperation; actual services and timelines are determined separately.
